Salivary Glands Treatment

Salivary Glands Treatment in Clínica 28

Sialoadenitis is an inflammation of  a salivary gland. There are three large salivary glands: parotid, submandibular, and sublingual. Saliva plays an important role in the digestive system, as well as in moistening the mouth. Any disorders in the salivary glands functioning lead to serious consequences, so their treatment is recommended to be carried out immediately when the first symptoms are detected.

How are the salivary glands treated in Clínica 28?

Sialadenitis (sialoadenitis) can be recognized by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • pain while eating or swallowing food
  • swelling of the face or neck
  • changes in taste
  • the presence of an unpleasant “aftertaste” in the oral cavity
  • dry mouth
  • difficulty opening the mouth

If you notice any of these symptoms  you may have salivary glands inflammation, and you should schedule a consultation for a through examination.  Sialadenitis develops can be either an  acute or chronic disease and appropriate treatment should be tailored to each patient considering their symptoms.

Treatment of a chronic salivary gland disease:

Before treating chronic salivary gland disease, a meticulous clinical examination is essential. An MRI, CT or ultrasound might be necessary as well.  At times, an appropriate antibiotic treatment will be considered before any surgical intervention is attempted.

Once the necessity of surgical intervention has been established, the endoscopic approach is considered the most conservative one.  During the procedure, a small video camera is used to enter the salivary glands for a clinically examination of the gland.

Following, using a specially designed micro-instruments, the surgeon can remove  salivary gland stones, that already introduce various medications into the gland, and eliminate any strictures – scarring of the ducts. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia or under sedation.

Using this treatment method has many advantages:

  • No skin incisions or scars
  • It is not traumatic, allowing gland preservation
  • Very few postoperative complications
  • The treatment offers vary favorable results

Treatment of an acute inflammation:

Drugs that stimulate saliva production are used, which should normalize the functioning of the gland. Additionally, medications are prescribed to relieve inflammation and for decontamination of the oral cavity. Physiotherapy has been proven helpful as well.

An important factor in therapeutic treatment is the patient’s compliance with a special regime for
oral care including some dietary changes and rigorous tooth brushing. It is also helpful to drink plentifully – weather it is milk, herbal infusions or fresh juices.

When the swelling and pain persists despite conservative treatments, surgery should be considered.
Some of the surgical procedures performed for these symptoms include drainage, gland excision and removal of salivary stones:

  • Drainage: If an abscess has formed in the salivary gland, it should be drained .
  • Salivary gland excision: frequent inflammation of the salivary gland will often necessitate removal of the gland
  •  Removal of a salivary stone:  stones located in the opening of the gland will not allow the saliva to flow properly. These stones must be remove

“Dr. Vyshkevych operated my salivary glands. Prior to the procedure, I was very worried, because I read that there are several large vessels and nerves  concentrated under the tongue. However, everything has gone perfectly well. I would definitely recommend this doctor as a top-level specialist!"
